How Often Should Carpets Be Cleaned?

How Often Should Carpets Be Cleaned?

As a general rule, have carpets professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Homes with children, pets or smokers may want to do it every 6 to 12 months. Check your carpet warranty too, as some manufacturers ask for regular professional cleaning.

A simple guide

  • Light use, no pets: every 12 to 18 months.
  • Family homes: every 6 to 12 months.
  • Pets or smokers: every 3 to 6 months for the busiest areas.
  • Hallways and stairs: often more frequently than the rest of the house.

These are guidelines, not rules. A guest room may need cleaning far less often than the hallway.

Signs it is due

  • Walkways look flat, grey or darker than the rest of the room.
  • The room smells stale soon after vacuuming.
  • Allergy symptoms feel worse at home.
  • It has been years, and you cannot remember the last time.

Why not wait until it looks dirty?

Carpets hide dirt well. By the time a carpet looks dirty, grit has already been wearing at the fibres for a long while. Cleaning earlier helps it last.

What you can do in between

  • Vacuum at least weekly, and more in busy areas.
  • Blot spills straight away.
  • Use door mats, and take shoes off at the door.
