Does Carpet Cleaning Kill Fleas?

Does Carpet Cleaning Kill Fleas?

Carpet cleaning can remove some fleas, eggs and larvae, but it is not a reliable way to end an infestation. To get rid of fleas, you need to treat your pet, treat your home and vacuum regularly. Cleaning can be a useful extra step, once you have checked it will not interfere with any flea treatment you have used.

Why cleaning alone does not solve it

Flea pupae are protected inside tough cocoons deep in the carpet, and they can survive cleaning. New fleas can then hatch for weeks afterwards. If your pet still has fleas, they will soon bring the problem back.

What works

  1. Treat your pets with a product recommended by your vet.
  2. Vacuum thoroughly and often, including edges, under furniture and stairs. Empty the vacuum outside.
  3. Wash pet bedding on a hot wash.
  4. Use a household flea treatment where needed, following the label carefully.

When to have your carpets cleaned

Check the instructions on any household flea spray before cleaning. Many ask you not to wash or clean treated carpets for a set period, because that can remove the product. If you are unsure, tell us what you used when you ask for a quote.

Severe infestations

If the problem carries on after treatment, speak to your vet or a pest control company.

Once the fleas have gone, a deep clean can freshen everything up. See our carpet cleaning and pet odour removal services.
